Fiber Arts

Fiber arts is a fun and diverse practice with deep historical roots. In the modern day we still see this art form in practice on the catwalk and in our grandparent’s living rooms, but with the right instruction, this art practice has something for everyone. With resources for knitting, sewing, felting, silk painting, and more, the Fiber Arts studio allows you to dip your toes into the world of textiles, or dive in headfirst.

Tools Available

  • Bernina sewing machines
  • Quilting tools
  • Fabric dyeing equipment

Fibers Studio Orientation Information

Studio Orientations
Please visit the Craft Center home page to view registration dates for orientations including Fibers Orientations (Sewing Machine) . To register, visit myemu.uoregon.edu.

You must have previous experience to take a Fibers Orientation.

For the sewing machine, that experience must include the following:

  • Competence in threading and using a sewing machine.
  • Understanding of different types of stitches and when to use them.
  • Ability to read and follow sewing machine manuals.
  • Knowledge of fabric types and how they behave.

An orientation is no longer required for non-sewing machine processes. Interstered participants must check in at the front desk and read a policy card prior to using the space and purchase a Day Pass or Term Pass for non-students. For other fibers processes including spinning, felting, embroidery, knitting, and crochet, that experience must include the following:

  • Ability to manage and prepare fibers (e.g., spinning, or felting).
  • Proficiency in the craft medium (e.g., knitting, embroidery, crochet, needle felting).

Fibers Studio Policies

Orientation Required: First-time users need to complete a studio orientation to review tools, safety, and cleanup procedures. To use the Lego Table, first chat with out front desk staff when you check in.

Respect Shared Space: Noise should be kept low; use headphones if listening to music. Do not move other people's items without the help of a Craft Center employee.

Clean Your Workspace: Users are responsible for cleaning any materials and surfaces they use, disposing of trash in designated bins, and leaving the space ready for others.

Storage: Work can be stored in the designated cubbies, but must be labeled with a Project Storage Card and removed or given an updated Project Storage Card every two-weeks. Items left without an updated Project Storage Card will be recycled.

End of Term Clean Up: All stored projects and/or materials, even if labeled, must be removed by end of day of Friday during Week Ten of the current term. Studio clean out will happen during Finals Week of the current term. All stored projects and/or materials left behind will be recycled.

No Food or Drink: For safety reasons, no food or drink is allowed in the studio. Lidded containers are fine.

Closed-Toe Shoes: The Craft Center requires closed-toe shoes to be worn in every studio. If you do not have proper footwear, you will be turned away.
