Glassworking

The Craft Center's Glass studio is the spot for all your glass working needs. With different specialties, such as the Flameworking Shop, Hot Shop, Fusing/Slumping Shop, and the Cold Shop, you will be well on your way to creating an array of beautiful, glass objects.

Glass working can be challenging to learn. It is hot, very physical, and not without the risks of burns or cuts. Anyone capable of working safely and properly as determined by Craft Center Staff may access the glass studio.

Glass Studio Policies

Orientation Required: First-time users need to complete a studio orientation to review tools, safety, and cleanup procedures.

Safety: Eye protection must be worn at all times. Long hair needs to be tied back. (If you need a hair tie, just ask the front desk!)

Materials: Stained and fusing glass is available for purchase in varying sizes. Glass is priced by the piece. Please see a Craft Center staff member for assistance with glass purchase. Sheet glass larger than 12 inches x 12 inches will need a Glass Studio Technician to assist with purchase.

Flameworking reservations can be made here. For UO Students, the price is $10.00 per hour. For non-students, the price is $15.00 per hour plus the purchase of either a Day Pass or Term Pass. No refunds are available for flameworking reservations. You must supply your own glass for a flameworking reservation.

The Craft Center maintains a strict policy against the making of drug paraphernalia.

Hot Shop: No access to the Hot Shop/glassblowing outside of scheduled workshops.

Respect Shared Space: Noise should be kept low; use headphones if listening to music. Do not move other people's items without the help of a Craft Center employee.

Clean Your Workspace: Users are responsible for cleaning any materials and surfaces they use, disposing of trash in designated bins, and leaving the space ready for others.

Storage: Work can be stored in the designated cubbies, but must be labeled with a Project Storage Card and removed or given an updated Project Storage Card every two-weeks. Items left without an updated Project Storage Card will be recycled.

End of Term Clean Up: All stored projects and/or materials, even if labeled, must be removed by end of day of Friday during Week Ten of the current term. Studio clean out will happen during Finals Week of the current term. All stored projects and/or materials left behind will be recycled.

No Food or Drink: For safety reasons, no food or drink is allowed in the studio. Lidded containers are fine.

Closed-Toe Shoes: The Craft Center requires closed-toe shoes to be worn in every studio. If you do not have proper footwear, you will be turned away.
