Winter Term Studio Orientations
Woodworking Orientations will be posted and available for registration starting at 10am on Monday, January 13. To register, visit myemu.uoregon.edu.
You must have previous experience to take a Woodworking Orientation.
For use of the woodshop and bench room, that experience must include the following:
- Proficiency in safely using power tools like saws, drills, and sanders.
- Understanding of wood grain and basic joinery techniques.
- Knowledge of measurement and cutting accuracy.
- Familiarity with sanding, finishing, and sealing wood pieces.
- Ability to safely share studio space.
Woodworking Studio Policies
Orientation Required: First-time users need to complete a studio orientation to review tools, safety, and cleanup procedures.
Safety: All users must be wearing safety glasses with side-shields. Regular glasses without side-shields are not sufficient. Safety glasses can be checked out at the front desk. Side-shields can be purchased for prescription glasses. Hair must be pulled back (if you need a hair tie, just ask the front desk!).
Woodshop users must check in with a Woodshop Supervisor before beginning work. A Woodshop Supervisor must be present to access the Tool Room.
A maximum of seven participants can work in the shop at a given time.
Materials & Equipment: Only supervisors are allowed to use the planer and surface sander, or change saw blades, router bits, or sanding belts.
Knotting lumber or plywood cannot be used on either the jointer or the planer.
Wet wood may only be used on the lathe. Wet wood for the lathe may be prep cut on the bandsaw with supervision, and all contacted surfaces must be cleaned thoroughly and lightly oiled after use.
Respect Shared Space: Noise should be kept low; use headphones if listening to music. Do not move other people's items without the help of a Craft Center employee.
Clean Your Workspace: Users are responsible for cleaning any materials and surfaces they use, disposing of trash in designated bins, and leaving the space ready for others.
Storage: Work can be stored in the Woodshop, but must be labeled with a Project Storage Card and removed or given an updated Project Storage Card every two-weeks. Items left without an updated Project Storage Card will be recycled. Please consider the scope of your project and talk to a Woodshop Supervisor about storage or plan assembly for your final steps to be completed at home.
End of Term Clean Up: All stored projects and/or materials must be labeled "Save for <next term>" by end of day of Friday during Week Ten of the current term. Studio clean out will happen during Finals Week of the current term. All projects and/or materials left behind without proper labeling will be recycled.
No Food or Drink: For safety reasons, no food or drink is allowed in the studio. Lidded containers are fine.
Closed-Toe Shoes: The Craft Center requires closed-toe shoes to be worn in every studio. If you do not have proper footwear, you will be turned away.
